One way of expressing this ideal is as the tension between two contradictory forces - on the one hand a longing for peace, stillness, escape and self realisation, and on the other a desire to help others, not to forsake the world of living beings all of whom, like us, suffer.
Mahayana Buddhism advises the simultaneous cultivation of both tendencies - a rich inner life and an altruistic outer life - up to the point where our dualistic notions 'snap' to produce 'not a third note but a star'.
