'Just as the earth and other elements
Are serviceable in many ways
To the infinite number of beings
Inhabiting limitless space;
So may I become
That which maintains all beings
Situated throughout space,
So long as all have not attained to peace.'
The teachings associated with the path of the Bodhisattva make it clear that Enlightenment is not a solely individual attainment. Enlightenment is the transcending of the distinction between self and other. This means that Going for Refuge is directed to gaining Enlightenment for the benefit of all. From its inception the Order has been inspired by the path of the Bodhisattva. Indeed Sangharakshita sees the Order as an attempt to manifest bodhicitta - the heart of wisdom and compassion. Ordination training involves contemplating the profundity of bodhicitta, cultivating the altruistic intention and doing whatever you can with others to communicate the Dharma as widely as possible.
