Brahmaviharas: Gateways to the Sublime

May all beings possess happiness with its causes, be parted from all grief, with its causes, not become parted from the happiness where in no grief is,  and dwell in the condition of equanimity. The Door to Inconceivable Wisdom and Compassion

This is the profound heart wish of the four Brahmaviharas – loving kindness, compassion, altruistic joy and equanimity –  a set of meditation practices that have the power to utterly transform our emotional lives and relations to others. While they pave the way for Insight and Bodhichitta, they begin with simple acts of kindness and helpfulness.

This retreat invites us to leave behind our habitual constricted mental states and unlock the sublime possibilities of the mind. These ‘sublimeabodes’ are also called the 'four illimitables' because they, like our potential to cultivate them, are limitless.

Coming on retreat

Coming on a retreat at Padmaloka is a step into another way of being, where we temporarily take up a way of life that is more supportive of Buddhist Practice. We go forth from our ordinary circumstances, our comforts and distractions so that we can discern and move towards our ideals and help others to do so as well. When booking a retreat at Padmaloka it is important to get a sense of how you will be living here - what our customs, etiquettes and requirements for being on retreat are.
